Job Description

The essential function of this position within the organization is to conduct hearings and make recommendations on matters referred for hearings by judges. The position is responsible for setting referred cases for hearing, conducting hearings, preparing factual and legal findings and recommendations for the parties and for the referring judge’s consideration, and reviewing the appropriateness of entry of ex parte orders for the Circuit Judges. This position works under the general supervision of the Chief Judge or designee. The office is located in the Columbia County Courthouse.

Education and Training Guidelines

Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.

Five years of experience in the practice of law.

Member in good standing with the Florida Bar.

Competencies

Knowledge of the responsibilities and authority of the General Magistrate, as set forth in the rules, statutes, and case law.

Knowledge of and ability to apply and interpret Florida statutes and case law concerning dependency, mental health, substance abuse, probate and guardianship, dissolution of marriage, child support, paternity, and foreclosure.

Knowledge of the Florida Family Law Rules of Procedure, Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Probate, and Rules of Judicial Administration and local administrative rules.

Knowledge of, and ability to interpret and apply the rules of evidence.

Ability to work with attorneys and self-represented litigants in stressful situations.

Ability to exercise a high degree of judgement, tact and ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to conduct legal research and to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.

Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Special Comments

The circuit covers Columbia, Dixie, Hamilton, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee, and Taylor Counties.

*Successful candidate will be hired at the minimum salary.
